Don't Let Them Take Your Ammo:Why Every Hunter Must Support H.R. 556
Hunters, our way of life is under attack. Once again, out-of-touch bureaucrats and anti-hunting extremists are trying to price us out of the field and off the water. They're trying to do it by banning the most common and affordable ammunition and fishing tackle, based not on sound science, but on a political agenda. But there's a bill in Congress that can stop them in their tracks, and we need every single member of Hunter Nation to stand up and fight for it.
The bill is called H.R. 556, the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act. It’s a commonsense piece of legislation that protects our traditions from federal overreach.
What is H.R. 556 and Why Does it Matter?
In simple terms, H.R. 556 stops the federal government from issuing sweeping, nationwide bans on traditional lead ammunition and fishing tackle on our public lands.
Anti-hunting groups have been pushing for these bans for years, and the current administration is listening. They are already moving to prohibit lead ammo and tackle in certain national wildlife refuges, with a full ban set to take effect on September 1, 2026. If they get their way, the affordable ammunition you’ve always used could be illegal on vast stretches of public land, forcing you to buy expensive alternatives that can cost two or three times as much.
This isn't about conservation; it's about control. As Hunter Nation founder Keith Mark says,
"American hunters are the backbone of conservation in this country, and it is imperative that we protect our traditional American values and our way of life. We must hold those in Washington accountable and ensure that the voices of America's sportsmen and women are heard at every level of government."
H.R. 556 ensures that any decision about ammunition restrictions is based on real, site-specific science, not political pressure. It requires proof that lead is the primary cause of a wildlife decline in a specific area and mandates that any restrictions are made in partnership with state fish and wildlife agencies—the experts who actually manage our wildlife.
The Attack on Our Traditions
This isn't just about the cost of a box of shells. It's an attack on the very foundation of our hunting heritage. For generations, we’ve relied on these tools to put food on the table and manage wildlife populations effectively.
Rock and roll legend and avid hunter Ted Nugent has been fighting against this kind of overreach for decades. As Ted puts it,
"The DNR and the NRC have chased families out of the sport over absolutely insane anti-nature anti-science regulations. The hunters and fishermen and trappers of this great state and nation are responsible for the healthiest wildlife populations since the 1700s."
He’s right. Hunters are the original conservationists. The taxes we pay on firearms and ammunition, through the Pittman-Robertson Act, fund the vast majority of wildlife conservation and habitat restoration in the United States. A ban on the most widely used ammunition would not only hurt hunters' wallets but also slash the critical funding that our wildlife agencies depend on.
YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED: A Call to Action
This is a critical moment. The radical anti-hunting lobby is pouring money into this fight, and the only way we win is if they hear from us—the grassroots army of American hunters. We need to flood the phone lines and inboxes of Congress and tell them to stand with hunters, not with the extremists.
It's time to make our voices heard. Your Representative and your Senators work for YOU. It is your duty to tell them to protect your rights and your heritage.
Take Action in Two Minutes:
- Contact Your U.S. Representative: Click here to find your representative's office number and email.
- Contact Your U.S. Senators: Click here to find the contact information for both of your senators.
- Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: If you prefer to call, dial (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your legislator's office.
When you call or write, tell them your name, where you're from, and give them this simple message:
"I am a hunter and a voter. I am calling to urge you to vote YES on H.R. 556, the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act. Protect our traditions and stop the ban on lead ammunition."
As Keith Mark reminds us,
"It's time for hunters to wake up, because we are one election cycle away from losing this traditional American lifestyle. If we vote in a block, we can control the narrative."
The fight is here. Let's win it.
